History of Ray Ban Eyewear
The history of Ray Bans mens and womens eyewear has been making high-quality designer eyeglasses, sunglasses, and frames since 1936. However, their origin story starts a few years prior to the release of their first official pair of sunglasses.
In 1929, the US Army commissioned Bausch & Lomb, which at the time was a medical equipment manufacturer, to create an aviation-style of sunglasses for the military. They wanted a specific design that would reduce blue and white hues in the sky for their pilots. This later evolved into men's eyeglasses, polarized sunglasses and many different kinds of Ray-Ban eyewear.
The first known prototype was called the ‘Anti-Glare’ which had plastic frames and green lenses. When this was redesigned with a metal frame, they were released as Ray Ban Aviators and have become an established icon in history.
The Ray-Ban Eyewear Collection. Designed with innovative materials, the styles featured under the Ray-Ban Tech collection reflect Ray-Ban’s classic, iconic heritage and history that began in the 1930’s with athletes, pilots, and naval aviators-- heroes in need of anti-glare protection. All Ray-Ban Tech lenses must pass the FDA Drop Ball Test in which a 16mm steel ball is dropped onto the lens from a height of 1.27 meters. The P3 and P3PLUS lenses guarantee exceptional polarization and 100 percent UV protection making these hardworking frames perfect for the Ray-Ban consumer who plays even harder.
Ray-Ban History, More..
Ray-Ban was founded in 1937 by the American Company Bausch & Lomb, and is best known for its Wayfarer and Aviators styles of sunglasses. The sunglasses were developed in response to a request from the US military to address pilot headaches and altitude sickness due to the intense blue and white hues of the sky. As a result, anti-reflective coatings were invented with green lenses to cut the glare without obscuring the view.
Next, Ray-Ban redeveloped its lenses and frames for the benefit of sporting enthusiasts, thus creating the Outdoorsman. This was followed by the Wayfarer, made famous by James Dean in the 1955 movie “Rebel Without A Cause”. This was later followed by the “wrap style” – the Olympian I and II – which were worn by Peter Fonda in “Easy Rider”. Then came the Balorama, worn by Clint Eastwood in “Magnum Force”. The credits continued in the iconic movies “The Blues Brothers” (Jim Belushi and Dan Akroyd), “Risky Business” (Tom Cruise), and “Top Gun” (Tom Cruise).
The brand was purchased in 1999 by the largest eyewear manufacturer in the world – Luxottica. Luxottica’s vision for the brand has dramatically increased the breadth of the line. In 2003 they added the eyeglasses line, followed by the children’s line (mostly for young adults 8-12 years), and this has been our most popular youth line by far due to the impact protection and style that all the kids love.
