"Style is very personal. It has nothing to do with fashion. Fashion is over very quickly. Style is forever.” These words by Ralph Lauren are the basis for the brand he has built over the last 57+ years. It all started when Ralph Lauren launched a tie collection under the name "Polo". Working out of a drawer in the Empire State Building, Ralph started with a collection of wide ties, each made with the highest quality and more most durable fabric that he could find. He launched the first full men's collection in 1968, a collection which included a white flannel suit and dress shirts in unusual colors. He was searching for a romantic vision at that time. By 1970 he had opened a "Polo by Ralph Lauren" shop in Bloomingdale's, the first-ever boutique that the store had offered to a single designer. In the following year he opened his first standalone store on Rodeo Drive in Beverly HIlls, which was quickly followed by another 7 stores in major cities across the United States.
